There are many benefits including reduced muscle tightness and tension, improved range of motion and flexibility, increased circulation, alleviates pain/soreness from strenuous work, reduces recovery or down time, and many more too numerous to list! 2. What are some symptoms of muscle soreness? If your horse is sore, he/she may be refusing or resisting leads, exhibit a decrease in performance ability or willingness, girthing problems, tail wringing, or may display aggressive or cranky behavior in the stall or while being brushed. While massage therapy does not replace the need for veterinarian care, it does compliment many treatments. 3. What is done during a typical equine massage session? After discussing the horses past and current health and exercise history, the therapist will do a brief evaluation of movement and tenderness. The massage techniques are based on human sports massage techniques and the session generally lasts about 90 minutes. Pre-event warm-up or post-event recovery massages last about 30 minutes. An evaluation form including treatment notes will be given to caregiver, as well as stretching exercises to be done afterwards. 4. Is massage and chiropractic the same? No. Massage manipulates soft tissue while chiropractic involves the joints. In human or equine therapy, the two work great together but does not replace one another. In many cases, if the muscles are thoroughly addressed the body will take care of itself. 5. Can a Certified Equine Massage Therapist diagnosis? No. Consult your veterinarian regarding any injuries or illnesses before contacting your equine massage therapist. Your horse will be treated according to your veterinarian's advisement and diagnosis. _______________________________________________________________
